Transfer ownership

Hand a group to another member, including what happens to billing.

Updated July 9, 2026

Ownership can move from one person to another, which is handy when a season ends and leadership changes. Only the current owner can start a transfer, and it’s done on a computer.

Start a transfer

The transfer control lives in the group’s billing area:

  1. On a computer, choose Organization in the left sidebar, then the Billing tab.
  2. Scroll to the danger zone at the bottom and choose Transfer Ownership.
  3. Pick an existing, active member to receive the group. They need to be 18 or older, then confirm.

The chosen member gets a request and accepts it. When they do, they become the owner and you become an admin. While a transfer is pending, the entire organization may be read-only until it’s finished. You can check its status from Billing.

What happens to billing

If the group is on a paid plan, the new owner sets up their own payment. On acceptance, the previous owner’s subscription ends without a final charge, and the new owner completes checkout under their own account. They have 7 days to finish checkout, otherwise the group enters a suspended state. Read more about the suspended state on Cancel and Delete a Group. A free group has no billing step, so it transfers without checkout.

Every transfer is recorded, so there’s a clear history of who handed the group to whom.

Changing your mind

Before the other person accepts, either side can cancel or decline the pending transfer, and it also expires on its own after 7 days. Once it’s been accepted, it isn’t a one-click undo, but the new owner can simply start a fresh transfer back to you.
